Brisbane City, the largest LGA (local government area) in Australia, passed the population milestone of one million people during 2006–07 increasing by 15,700 people over the year. Brisbane experienced the second largest increase of all Australian LGAs.

Gold Coast City experienced the largest population increase (16,600) in Australia during the year ending June 2007, even though its population was less than half that of Brisbane (1,007,900). Consequently, the Gold Coast’s annual growth rate (3.5 per cent) was more than double the Brisbane figure (1.6 per cent) and the second-fastest in Queensland in 2006–07 after Weipa Town.

Following recent LGA reforms, the area of Gold Coast City was reduced by the transfer of some of its northern area to Logan City. Based on the previous boundaries, the population increase of Gold Coast City during 2006–07 was 17,200 people.
