The Queensland Governments summit on managing population growth wraps up in Brisbane today.

Yesterday, Premier Anna Bligh suggested developing Townsville in the states north as a second capital city for Queensland.

She also flagged a speed-up of development approvals and urged banks to lend more to unit developers.

The growth conference was told yesterday it is likely to become harder for low-income earners to afford housing as the population increases.

Brisbane Housing Company spokesman David Cant says creating compact high-density apartments in urban areas could reduce the problem. Read more…

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh says the State Government will push ahead with plans to host the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Ms Bligh says $11 million will be spent bidding for the games in 2018.

She says an independent assessment by the Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) found the Gold Coast was capable of hosting the international sporting event. Read more…

This Sunday March 28th I turn the big “six 0″. It makes me look back at the last 10 years and consider how much life has changed for Marion and me. Nick asked me if I would be willing to share a bit of my story this week while he is busy hosting live events in Sydney. I appreciate that someone else’s story may be of little interest to you right now; but don’t stop reading as I am confident that within my story you will find a key to your own! It was only a very thin thread back in 1999 that brought about my change in fortune.

We started investing in property early 1999 and at that time we had a house in Adelaide valued at $82,000, still with a mortgage, very average incomes (Marion was part time), two teenage kids (expensive!) and we would honestly not have had $2,000 in the bank. We were not in bad shape as such but our options were very limited and a night out at Pizza Hut with the kids was about our weekly limit.

I had worked with the same electrical wholesaling company for 26 years and would probably still be there today had things gone a little differently. A friend (Doug Wroe, who is now also with mrd) had just purchased an investment property in Queensland and while I had no interest in property investment I did get the job of creating a web site (my hobby business) for that company (not mrd), later managing the site I built.
